Contexte.
Conclusion.
Background. As a contraceptive method, the female condom is as effective as the male condom. The female condom is the only women-initiated method available for protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Its use remains scarce in France.
Objective. To assess the effects in terms of knowledge, opinions and experimentations, of an intervention about the female condom with medical students.
Methods. Opinion survey carried out with fourth year medical students undertaking an optional course on prevention at the Paris Diderot University. Intervention: promotion and demonstration of female condom, followed by distribution of samples to medical students. Comparison of the answers given before and after the intervention.
Results. 124 students completed both surveys: 33 men and 91 women (sex ratio: 1/3). 9 students (7%) had tried a female condom before the intervention. 18 students (15%) tried it for the first time after the intervention (10 women and 8 men). 83 students (67%) felt that the intervention had changed their representation of the female condom. 61 students (49%) would recommend it to a friend. The advantages of the female condom pointed out by students were: women appropriation of the control over the exposure to STIs, possibility of setting up before sex. The disadvantages identified were: unsightly and unusual, high price, low diffusion in drugstores.
Conclusion. A single intervention on the female condom among medical students seems able to change their opinion. Some drawbacks may remain impediments to its dissemination.
